What is body contouring surgery?

Body contouring, or body sculpting, is a medical or surgical procedure that aims to reshape an area of the body. In other words, body contouring surgery is a combination of a facelift, eyebrow lift and forehead lift, mammoplasty, abdominoplasty, and gluteoplasty.

Body contouring does not usually help you lose weight. Instead, it helps shape the body and address specific areas where weight loss isn’t effective or after significant weight loss results in extra skin.

During the body contouring operation, not only excess fat tissue is removed, but also excess skin is shaved off. Usually, body contouring surgery combines both liposuction and a lift.
Because alone, these procedures not only have no effect but can spoil the whole appearance and deprive the patient of the desired aesthetic effect.

Body contouring surgery includes buttock, thigh, and lower tummy tuck, as well as Brachioplasty. In body contouring surgery, incisions are made in such a way that they can be easily hidden under clothing and are usually located in the natural folds of the body.

Layered cosmetic sutures are applied to support the lifting effect, which allows the skin to be tightened and smoothed.
After body contouring surgery, as with other plastic surgeries, there may be some tissue swelling. To reduce them, compression knitwear is used, as well as sterile drainage tubes placed in the wound.

For whom is the body shaping surgery recommended?

Body contouring surgery is recommended for patients with loose skin on the buttock, back, front, and side surfaces of the thighs, and lower abdomen, and a relatively thin layer of fat under the skin, as well as for patients with severe weight loss.

In the case of obesity, body contouring surgery is performed only after liposuction. Because losing weight after body contouring will negate the entire effect of the operation.

For patients who have undergone bariatric surgery, body contouring is recommended after 1 year in the form of stretching in one or other problem areas, so that the results of bariatric interventions can be achieved and the patient can lose weight.

Body contouring surgery is not desirable for women planning to give birth in the future. Because after giving birth, she will need this kind of plastic surgery again. Therefore, it is best to schedule body contouring surgery for postpartum.

How is body contouring performed?

Body contouring surgery is usually performed under a general anesthetic. Sometimes an epidural (a local anesthetic that numbs the body from the waist down) may be used. The medical practitioner will make every effort to place incisions (cuts) within natural skin folds and in areas where the scars will be hidden by clothes. However, this is not always possible and some scars may be visible.

There are different types of body contouring. Depending on your individual circumstances, the medical practitioner may recommend one or more surgeries to achieve the desired results.

During abdominal stretching and stretching of the front surface of the thighs, the patient is stretched on his back. Two main methods are possible, which should be discussed with the plastic surgeon.

•    The first method is a combination of contoured tummy tuck and abdominoplasty.
•    The second method - if the patient does not have visible abdominal muscle weakness and atony, or if he has previously undergone abdominoplasty, the combination of contoured abdominoplasty and inner thigh lifting.
The surgical intervention takes from 4 to 7 hours, depending on the size of the operation.

Body contouring surgery cost

One of the most frequently asked questions is about the cost of body contouring surgery. The prices of all operations or procedures vary depending on the clinic, doctor, plastic surgeon, and other aspects.

Rehabilitation period

Body contouring surgery can combine one or more types of intervention, which depends on the patient's condition, the nature and volume of the operation. In some cases, only buttock or thigh lifts are sufficient, in others, full abdominoplasty with liposuction and other areas of the body are enough.

After surgery, you may need to use surgical drains to remove excess fluid or blood that may collect at the surgical site. Your doctor will explain how to use and care for your drain. Your doctor may also require that you wear a compression garment for six to eight weeks.

A special diet is prescribed for several days. To avoid complications, it is important to follow all the instructions of the treating doctor. To reduce swelling of soft tissues, special compression bandages (abdomen) or compression knitwear (thighs, arms) are applied after the operation.

Usually, the stitches are absorbed by themselves. If non-absorbable sutures were placed, they are removed after a week. When the sutures are removed, the drains are also removed. It is imperative to avoid heavy physical exertion and lifting weights for 1 month after the operation. Sports and physical training should also be postponed for a while. The rehabilitation period usually takes 3-4 weeks.
