Abdominoplasty — surgical correction of abdominal contours

What is abdominoplasty

Understanding abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure that reshapes and tightens the abdominal area. Many women, regardless of age, wish to look beautiful and maintain their body shape. Today, with advances in plastic surgery, various procedures designed to correct the face and body are becoming increasingly accessible. Abdominoplasty is one of the most popular procedures for both women and men.

Benefits of abdominoplasty
  • Improve abdominal and waist contours;
  • Remove excess skin and fat (the skin-fat apron);
  • Improve overall skin condition and appearance;
  • Remove wrinkles, stretch marks (striae), and surgical scars;
  • Strengthen and tighten front abdominal wall muscles.

Indications for abdominoplasty
  • Loose abdominal skin and muscle separation following pregnancy;
  • Significant weight loss resulting in excess loose skin;
  • Presence of old surgical scars on the abdominal wall.

Contraindications for abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty is an extensive procedure requiring careful medical evaluation. All known contraindications must be considered before surgery. The surgical risk is particularly high in patients with uncompensated systemic diseases, including heart, kidney, respiratory, or endocrine disorders.

This is an aesthetic procedure, not a medical necessity. Therefore, it should only be performed after confirming that all possible risks to the patient's life and health are acceptable. Even minimal surgical risk must be thoroughly discussed. No surgeon or anesthesiologist will approve the procedure if any significant risk exists.

Abdominoplasty cost and techniques

Several surgical methods are available for abdominoplasty. The chosen technique depends on the patient's body type and aesthetic goals. For example, young women without prior pregnancies may benefit from different techniques than older patients. Abdominoplasty costs vary significantly based on the surgical method selected and the extent of correction needed.

How abdominoplasty is performed

Abdominoplasty can be performed under local or general anesthesia. Epidural (lumbar) anesthesia may be used for local procedures. The most extensive surgery uses specialized techniques with vertical and horizontal incisions. During the operation, the navel is repositioned, excess skin is removed and tightened, and a horizontal scar is created along the lower abdomen.

The classical technique produces excellent results but requires specific incision patterns. Alternative techniques exist for patients with less extensive needs. Sometimes extensive skin surgery allows navel repositioning without additional vertical incisions (when the waist area is in good condition). In such cases, stitches are placed only around the navel and along the horizontal bikini line.

Mini abdominoplasty is a less invasive option that addresses only the lower abdomen. This procedure requires only a horizontal incision; the navel is not repositioned. Sometimes the abdominal muscles require tightening (plication) to create a more defined waist. With more extensive surgery, strenuous abdominal exercises must be limited for 3-4 months. With classical abdominoplasty, the muscle layer is not disturbed, so light exercise can resume after 2 months.

Recovery after abdominoplasty

After surgery, the patient typically stays in the hospital for 2 days. During hospitalization, medical examinations, dressing changes, and careful wound care are performed. Once stable, the patient is discharged for home recovery. The recovery period requires specific care for optimal results.

Compression garments must be worn for 2 months following surgery. Avoid any strenuous physical activity or heat-generating procedures (sauna, steam bath, tanning beds, etc.) during the first 2 months. Light walking and gentle movement are encouraged to promote healing. Complete recovery typically takes 6-8 weeks, though full results may take several months.
