Lip Surgery: Cheiloplasty and Augmentation

Lip Surgery (Cheiloplasty)

Lip surgery and cheiloplasty

Cheiloplasty is a branch of plastic surgery. It involves the circular oral muscle and the mucous membrane that forms its base. Through modeling of these tissues, the shape and size of the lips are changed.

You can reduce or enlarge the lips with cheiloplasty. You can change their shape. You can remove wrinkles. You can add fullness to flattened lips. You can correct congenital defects and facial expression problems.

The lips are a very important part of the face. They participate in the mimetic process. They direct the attention of another person toward themselves. They enrich the informativeness of the entire appearance of the face.

Facial expression is an integral process. Individual muscle reactions participate in it. However, they are connected to each other with a common basis and unified purpose.

When a person's face shows a natural smile, pleasant and joyful states are reflected. They are reflected simultaneously in other facial features. They are united in a unified complex according to the law of harmony.

When Do Patients Choose Lip Surgery?

Thin lips are a common reason for lip surgery. Thick lips may also require treatment. Flattened lips need treatment. Drooping mouth corners are addressed. Lip wrinkles are treated.

Excessive mouth opening requires attention. Various lip defects may require surgery. These include congenital cases and post-trauma cases. Benign lip tumors may also require treatment.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Cheiloplasty?

Cheiloplasty can be performed for aesthetic purposes. It can also be performed for reconstruction purposes. For congenital defects, surgery is also used. There are no special restrictions for this procedure.

However, aesthetic correction should generally not be performed before face formation is complete. This occurs at age 16 for girls. It occurs slightly later for boys.

What Is Needed for Successful Cheiloplasty?

There should be no acute illness at the time of surgery. Stop taking aspirin-containing medications 10 days before. Stop smoking 10 days before and 3-4 weeks after. A bath should be taken the evening before.

Surgery is performed on an empty stomach. Use only half a glass of water for tooth and mouth cleaning.

How Is the Surgery Performed?

Lip surgery is performed under local infiltration anesthesia in a stationary setting. General anesthesia is also possible. The procedure usually lasts 30 minutes to 1.5 hours. Complex procedures can take longer.

Lip surgery can be performed in an outpatient setting. For combined procedures, hospitalization may be necessary. Cheiloplasty is often combined with nose, chin, or facelift surgery.

Rehabilitation (Recovery) Period

After surgery, a dressing is applied to the face. It is removed the next day. The first dressing is changed the day after surgery.

The patient's return to daily activities depends on how they feel. Usually, this is possible 3-5 days after surgery. Physiotherapy is recommended for rapid tissue recovery.

Physiotherapy helps with swelling reduction, bruising reduction, and sensation restoration.
