Syndactyly surgery: what to know about treatment

What is syndactyly?

Syndactyly is a congenital anomaly of hand and foot development. It involves complete or incomplete fusion of two or more fingers or toes. Surgical intervention aims to separate the fused digits.

Surgeons use various techniques based on defect complexity. They consider finger development and individual patient factors. The goal is to restore both appearance and function.

According to medical statistics, syndactyly accounts for 50% of congenital upper extremity anomalies. It occurs once in 2,000-3,000 newborns. It can be associated with other upper and lower limb deformities.

In more than half of affected children, skeletal and movement disorders are detected. Early diagnosis and treatment are important for development.

Causes and classification of syndactyly

Specialists classify syndactyly as congenital or acquired. The congenital form is more common. It develops during fetal development in the womb. The main causes include:

• Genetic predisposition inherited from parents;
• Uncontrolled use of pharmaceutical drugs in early pregnancy;
• Toxic exposure to the pregnant woman;
• Radiation exposure from X-rays;
• Maternal infections during pregnancy.

Indications for syndactyly surgery

Patients with hand syndactyly experience psychological discomfort. The cosmetic defect affects their self-image significantly. They may feel incomplete and lack social confidence.

Difficulty with social interaction is common in affected individuals. The condition limits not just finger movement but entire limb function. This creates significant psychological and physical challenges.

As a result, children fall behind developmentally. Their intellectual and speech abilities may stagnate or delay. This prevents normal education and future self-realization.

Regarding foot syndactyly, discomfort is also present in many cases. Although the defect can be hidden with shoes most of the time, many people feel incomplete or self-conscious. They often avoid gyms, pools, saunas, and beaches.

Foot finger anomalies rarely cause functional disorders or pain. Often, patients seek surgery to eliminate the cosmetic defect. Simple forms require surgery at 1-2 years of age.

Complex forms are indicated at 5 months to 1 year of age. Early intervention prevents developmental delays significantly. It also prevents complications like secondary deformities from occurring.

Treatment of syndactyly

Treatment of syndactyly is only possible through surgery alone. The variety of forms and presentations requires individualized technique selection. Each case has specific characteristics that must be considered.

Surgical intervention eliminates the cosmetic defect effectively. It also improves limb function and appearance substantially. Complex cases may require multiple plastic procedures to correct tissues.

Surgeons correct skin, soft tissues, and bone in complex cases. When planning surgery, the surgeon considers staged separation. If multiple fingers are syndactylous, separation follows a specific order.

First, the first and fifth fingers are separated. Then the second and third are separated next. Finally, the third and fourth fingers are separated last.

This approach is correct for medical reasons. It eliminates the risk of finger death during intervention. Major blood vessels are less likely to be damaged this way.

One principle surgeons follow is avoiding tension on wound edges. The skin must remain completely free and relaxed. Tension causes rough, unsightly scars and contractures to form.

Contractures prevent normal finger development and function. They also cause serious functional complications over time. Proper surgical technique prevents these undesirable outcomes.
