What is reconstructive surgery?

Reconstructive mammoplasty is one type of plastic breast surgery. The term reconstructive refers to restorative procedures. This surgery restores breast appearance and function after significant life events or medical conditions. Breast reconstruction is performed in several important cases.

• Total or partial mastectomy;
• Congenital breast asymmetry;
• Replacement of expired implants;
• Underdeveloped breast tissue or complete absence of breast tissue.

Contraindications

Breast reconstruction is contraindicated in certain medical conditions that must be treated first:

• Diabetes mellitus;
• Oncological diseases;
• Cardiovascular disease;
• Lung diseases.

In many cases, the procedure can be performed after underlying health problems are successfully resolved or controlled.

Surgical methods

Several surgical techniques are available for breast reconstruction. Single-stage procedures combine multiple surgical steps into one operation. This involves tissue removal and reconstruction using silicone implants or autologous tissue grafts.

One-stage reconstruction occurs in one or more phases depending on complexity. In the first variant, no additional surgery is needed later, avoiding extra scarring. This approach is ideal for partial mastectomy cases and can be performed three different ways:

• Autologous tissue approach (using the patient's own tissue);
• Implant and expander technique;
• Combined approach using autologous tissue and expanders.

Staged procedures involve two phases: first, an expander is placed to gradually stretch the skin, then the permanent implant is inserted. This staged approach allows more precise breast volume and shape selection during the final reconstruction phase.

Recovery period

After surgery, patients typically require approximately 5 days of hospitalization. During this time, pain management uses analgesics and swelling resolves naturally within a few days. Sutures are usually removed on day 5 after the procedure. Women must wear compression garments, attend regular medical follow-ups, and carefully follow all surgeon instructions for optimal healing.
