Upper Blepharoplasty: Surgery for Drooping Eyelids

Upper blepharoplasty surgery.

Upper blepharoplasty at a glance.

What is upper blepharoplasty?

Upper blepharoplasty is a widely requested aesthetic plastic procedure. It corrects drooping upper eyelids and gives the eyes a more open, expressive look. The operation removes the excess soft tissue that gathers above the lash line. Many patients notice a distinctly younger appearance afterwards. That is no surprise, because a heavy upper lid is one of the clearest signs of ageing.

How is upper blepharoplasty performed?

Upper blepharoplasty is usually carried out under local anaesthesia. General anaesthesia is used only where it is genuinely needed. The procedure itself takes about thirty minutes on average.

It is often combined with other types of eyelid surgery. When that happens, the additional work decides how long the operation takes.

Before starting, the surgeon marks the incision lines on the skin. The areas of skin to be removed are marked at the same time. The incision can be made with a scalpel or with a laser.

A price cannot be quoted in advance with any precision. It depends on the patient and on the individual anatomy of the eyelid.

Recovery.

Blepharoplasty is an operation people recover from fairly easily. The first stage of recovery takes about two weeks. Stitches come out on the fifth day. Swelling and bruising settle during the first week. Compresses, physiotherapy and cosmetic treatments can speed that up.

The scar sits inside the natural crease of the upper lid and is very fine. It becomes harder to see as time passes. The final result is clear after roughly one and a half to two months. During recovery it is best to avoid heavy exertion, heat, alcohol and nicotine.
