What is Forehead Reduction Surgery?
Today, technological advances in aesthetic surgery provide many ways to improve appearance. One such method is forehead reduction surgery. This surgery is also known as hairline correction, frontoplasty and forehead shortening surgery.
Normally the hairline starts 5-8 cm above the eyebrows. In people with high hairline or long foreheads, this distance is much greater. People are often unhappy with this facial appearance because it looks asymmetric.
Important factors to consider when performing forehead reduction surgery are scalp elasticity, hair density and structure. Usually, surgery is easier with elastic scalp due to comfortable movements. If your scalp is firmer, a two-stage surgery may be required.
How is Forehead Reduction Surgery Performed?
Forehead reduction procedure starts with consultation where the desired forehead level and hairline shape are determined.
1. Once you are satisfied with the planned forehead height, the specialist can begin the procedure.
2. To remove excess skin from the forehead, the specialist makes a transfollikullar incision.
3. Then the specialist brings the scalp to the desired level, creating a new hairline.
4. Recovery phase. The transfollikullar incision is important. It serves hair growth and helps hide the incision during recovery.
Recovery Time After Forehead Reduction Surgery
Recovery after forehead reduction surgery is usually shorter and painless. The aesthetic surgeon applies light dressing to the surgical area which is removed the next day. Stitches are removed after 3-7 days, after which you can return to normal activities. Physical work is not recommended during recovery.
Do Scars Remain After Forehead Reduction Surgery?
Because forehead reduction surgery involves creating an incision, a small temporary scar may remain along the new hairline. After surgery, scars may be reddish in color and sensitive for a time.
However, as hair grows along the incision length, the scar usually becomes almost completely invisible after two weeks. The degree of scarring depends on your surgeon's experience and how careful you are after surgery.
Is Forehead Reduction Surgery Safe?
Forehead reduction surgery is considered safe. However, if the plastic surgeon is inexperienced, like any surgery, it has risks (mild bleeding, numbness, infection, scarring and edema).
To avoid complications during and after surgery, ensure your surgeon is qualified and experienced, you are treated at a certified clinic, and follow your doctor's instructions carefully.
