Ponytail Lift Surgery: Indications and Recovery

What Is Ponytail Lift Surgery? A Patient Guide

What Is Ponytail Lift Surgery?

This procedure reshapes the face and restores a younger look. It is not, however, the right choice for every patient.

Ponytail lift surgery works best in the upper and middle thirds of the face. There it can replace a forehead lift, also called endoscopic temporoplasty, or a midface lift, where lost cheek volume is restored.

For women up to the age of 60, the procedure can be done across all facial zones.

The exact plan still depends on the individual patient. A board-certified plastic surgeon should make the final call. This technique was first invented and officially patented by me in plastic surgery.

Indications for Ponytail Lift Surgery

The operation is recommended for the following age-related changes:

  • Loose, slack skin and loss of tone.

  • Drooping of the eyebrows.

  • Sagging of facial muscles and fascia.

  • Visible nasolabial folds.

  • A double chin or fullness under the jaw.

Ponytail lift contraindications

  • Active cancer or oncology treatment.

  • Bleeding or clotting disorders.

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding.

  • Acute infections.

  • Heart, vascular or endocrine disease.

How the Operation Is Performed

It is done through small cuts placed inside the hair.

Each incision is under one centimetre long. Facial procedures of this kind can stand alone, follow each other, or be done at the same time. Any extra anti-ageing work and the scope of the operation are set during planning with your plastic surgeon.

It is often paired with a SMAS lift, a blepharoplasty, and submental or cheek liposuction.

For patients over 60, a facelift is done with the traditional method, or by combining the traditional and endoscopic approaches.

Recovery Period

Recovery takes about two to three weeks.

You will wear a compression mask for five to seven days. Mini stitches come out on day fourteen. Endotines, if placed, do not need to be removed. They dissolve on their own.

For one month, you should avoid heavy physical activity, especially sport.

Baths, saunas and solariums are also off the table. During this time, dry your hair with cool air.
