One of the questions my patients ask me most often is whether rhinoplasty surgery is a painful procedure. I have set aside space in this article to answer it. But first, let me explain what rhinoplasty is, the conditions under which it is performed, and the situations in which it is indicated.

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to correct deformities of the nose caused by congenital factors or by acquired trauma. Its aim is to create a natural-looking nose that harmonises with the patient's facial features.

It can also be combined with surgery to correct intranasal anatomical problems that cause acute or chronic nasal obstruction. This plastic operation improves the shape of the nose and at the same time relieves nasal obstruction.

The main goal of rhinoplasty is to create a new nose that allows the patient to breathe freely and harmonises naturally with the patient's facial features.

To achieve this, every aesthetic nose operation must follow an individual plan. The changes made to a patient's nose, the degree of those changes, and the techniques used during surgery can all differ from case to case. For this reason, the planning process before rhinoplasty is very important.

After assessing the patient's facial proportions, nasal structure, and skin quality, the planned rhinoplasty can include the following changes:

•    Narrowing or widening the nose;
•    Reducing the size of the nostrils;
•    Correcting the nasal bones;
•    Refining the nasal tip: lifting or reshaping it.

These changes create a beautiful, harmonious, natural-looking nose. When the shape of the nose is changed, it is also important to support or correct its breathing function.

Many people assume that rhinoplasty is a painful process, but this is a misconception. It should be noted that the procedure is performed only under general anaesthesia, so the patient feels nothing during it. Once the patient comes out of anaesthesia, the intensity and duration of any discomfort and pain are assessed individually.

Pain depends on the complexity of the plastic surgery, the nature and number of incisions, and the manipulation of the nasal tissues. As a rule, the unpleasant sensations after rhinoplasty are considered entirely tolerable by patients and last no more than two to three days. If the pain causes significant discomfort, the doctor prescribes painkillers to ease the recovery period.

    The main requirement for undergoing rhinoplasty is good general health and the absence of any contraindications. As with any other operation, several important tests must be carried out before rhinoplasty so that pain and other complications are kept to a minimum. These tests are:

•    Complete blood count;
•    Biochemical blood analysis (total protein, ALT, AST, total bilirubin, creatinine, urea, glucose, electrolytes);
•    General urine analysis;
•    Blood group and Rh factor analysis;
•    Blood tests for HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B and C (HBsAg, HCV);
•    Coagulogram;
•    ECG;
•    Chest X-ray.

The conclusion about readiness for surgery is given by the therapist. If relevant conditions are present, a consultation with the appropriate specialist is required. A visit to the anaesthesiologist is also needed to prepare for anaesthesia.

How should the recovery period go?

It should be noted that the patient must spend the first day after rhinoplasty in hospital. Discharge from the nose and swelling are possible. The swelling spreads not only over the nasal area but also to the eyelids. The splint is usually removed after one to two weeks. On average, recovery after rhinoplasty takes about one month.

This period varies depending on the extent of the procedure, the patient's health, and the care routine.

When only the soft tissues are addressed during rhinoplasty, recovery takes one to two weeks after the operation. If the bone is involved, recovery takes longer. Sport is restricted for six to twelve weeks after rhinoplasty. Returning to boxing after rhinoplasty depends on the complexity of the procedure.
