NASAL VALVE CORRECTION
What nasal valve correction treats
What is nasal valve correction?
The nasal valve sits in the front, or caudal, part of the nasal cavity. It is the narrowest part of the airway. It is formed by the front section of the nasal septum, the front end of the inferior turbinate, and the lower edge of the upper lateral cartilage.
When the structure of the valve is deformed, it narrows or collapses. That is one of the most common causes of difficult nasal breathing. Patients in this situation are troubled mainly by shortness of breath through the nose. A narrowed nasal valve is treated by nasal valve correction, a set of surgical steps that forms part of rhinoplasty surgery. It is most often carried out as part of a rhinoplasty.
When nasal valve correction is indicated
Mainly a narrow nasal valve that makes breathing difficult on one side.
Also difficult nasal breathing caused by that narrowing, where it leads to repeated acute sinusitis or allows acute sinusitis to become chronic.
How is nasal valve correction performed?
Surgical correction of the nasal valve is carried out under endotracheal anaesthesia. The operation is done carefully, preserving the unaltered structures of the nasal cavity. It finishes with packing of the nasal cavity.

Recovery
Time away from work is 10 to 14 days. A hospital stay lasts one to three days. The packing is removed from the nose the day after surgery. Afterwards the nasal cavity is kept clean, the lining is decongested, and it is then moistened with ointment applications. Nasal breathing returns over one and a half to two weeks, depending on how the patient heals.
Advice after surgery
Take care for one month after the operation. Avoid physical strain, overheating, getting cold, and any injury to the nose. For two weeks afterwards keep to a careful diet. Avoid hot food, hot drinks and alcohol.
