What is botox and how it works
What is botox? Botox is a protein-based neurotoxin with no color, taste, or odor. It is produced by bacteria known as clostridium botulinum.
In plain terms, it is a natural poison made by a specific clostridial strain. It acts on the nervous system, more precisely on the proteins in these cells, blocking the signals they send. Botox has several subtypes and is considered the most powerful natural poison known today. Despite this, modern medicine uses botox widely for medical and cosmetic purposes.
The bacteria that produce botox are anaerobic. This means they can only multiply in environments with little or no oxygen.
If they enter the human body and are not treated in time, they can cause botulism, which may be fatal. Because oxygen destroys these bacteria, infection most often comes from poorly prepared preserves, especially homemade canned goods. However, factory-made products are not entirely safe either.
To avoid poisoning, experts recommend that you heat-treat food products. This is especially true for animal-origin foods, where botulism is broken down and destroyed.
According to some sources, this process takes about 20 minutes, depending on the heat. Most guidelines suggest heating an open jar in boiling water for 30 to 40 minutes. Even this does not always remove the risk from botulinum toxin.

The bacterium behind botox was discovered in the late nineteenth century. In December 1897, Professor Emile van Ermengem of Ghent University investigated a case of poisoning.
Thirty-four musicians had been invited to perform at a funeral and later fell sick. Along with the offending ham, the organs of three deceased musicians were also sent to him. What Ermengem found in the ham and the organs he named Bacillus botulinum.
In Latin, this means roughly “sausage bacillus”, since botulus means sausage in Latin. The name was later changed to clostridia because the shape resembles a spindle. This time, the Greek word kloster was taken as the root.
Active study of the toxin produced by this bacterium began in the first half of the twentieth century. Serious interest grew during World War II, when the United States and several other countries invested in it as a potential biological weapon. In 1972, the United Nations General Assembly approved a convention on the disposal, production, and stockpiling of biological and toxin weapons. Since then, 183 member states have signed it, and only ten have not.
Even after secret military laboratories closed, researchers kept studying botulinum toxin. It became clear that this extremely dangerous substance could also serve entirely peaceful purposes. The ophthalmologist Alan Scott is credited as the first to use botulinum toxin in medicine.
In the 1970s, he learned to treat blepharospasm, involuntary blinking, and other muscle spasm problems with microdoses of the toxin. Conditions such as neck torticollis also responded to the same approach.
Since then, medicine has studied botox well and uses it across a wide spectrum of conditions, from migraines to overactive sweat glands.

The main effect of botox is the temporary blocking of nerve-to-muscle transmission. This causes the muscles to relax. Synapses sit inside muscle tissue, and they are the spaces between neurons and tissues.
When an electrical signal passes through a synapse, tiny channels open and acetylcholine is released into the muscle tissue. As a result, the muscle contracts. If botulinum toxin reaches the muscle tissue alongside the synapse, its molecules enter when the channels open and close them off. The muscle can no longer receive the signal to contract.
