Nose correction and lifting the nasal tip.

Nose correction: why the tip drops.

Whether the tip of the nose points down or up follows from how the tip cartilage sits and from its own anatomy.

A drooping nasal tip is an aesthetic problem that nose correction can solve.

The shape of the nose is set by the nasal and alar cartilage, and a neat tip completes it. When the tip drops, the proportions of the face are disturbed and asymmetry appears.

The drop becomes more noticeable with age. The skin of the tip and the columella gradually loses its elasticity. The tip thickens and turns further downwards.

When nose correction is indicated

• A pronounced split in the nasal cartilage.

• An over-large nasal tip.

• A tip that is raised or dropped.

• A bend after unsuccessful surgery or an injury to the nose.

• Nostrils that are asymmetric or too open.

Nose correction and lifting the tip surgically

Rhinoplasty.

The most reliable and effective way to lift the nasal tip is rhinoplasty, and the result lasts for life. Rhinoplasty raises a dropped tip easily. It narrows a rounded nose and lengthens a short one.

A dropped tip is corrected by removing part of the cartilage. The operation can be closed or open. In the closed method the surgeon makes the incision inside the lining of the nose.

The exposure is smaller that way. In return the patient is generally left with no visible scar, because the skin is not broken.

With the open method an incision is made across the columella, which lets the surgeon see and control the whole procedure.

The surgeon cuts across the columella, exposes the cartilage, trims what is excess and closes with sutures. A cartilage strut is used to lift the tip.

The operation lasts one to two hours. It is usually performed under general anaesthesia.

Forehead lift.

This method suits older patients with loose skin and drooping soft tissue. The excess skin is drawn down from the forehead along the columella, which gives the nose a better line.

A forehead lift can be combined with lifting other parts of the face where that is indicated, which removes the creased excess skin. The rest is drawn upwards and fixed in place. The result is a single smooth line.
